Ft. Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island were officially established in 1941. Pre historic Indians were mound builders and a museum collection with the artifacts exists on that mound today. The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spaniards.

The area has been colonized by the Spanish and the English and early maps labeled the area as Santa Rosa or Bay St. Rose. Contrary to popular belief, there was not much pirate activity in the area even though we love to celebrate the Billy Bowlegs festival every June. In 1861, Camp Walton was a confederate military camp used by the 1st Florida Regiment. Later in 1935, the military built what is today Eglin Air Force Base.

Today the visitors to our area enjoy staying on the white sandy beaches of Okaloosa Island. The newly remodeled beach park features outdoor activities and water sports. Be sure to get your boogie board and volleyball net out! Don't forget your sunscreen. The fishing pier next door is for the anglers and at night The Swamp and Howl At The Moon provide entertainment and concerts!

Noted photographer, Tricia Keffer has lived in the area for over 30 years. She has chosen the perfect spot on Okaloosa Island for your family's beach portrait. Choose Summertime Beach Portraits to capture your family's memory.
